Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, but you probably don't know the real origin of this event.
This event originated in Rome and dates back to the 3rd century. Valentine, a priest, defied the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius II, who had forbidden youthful marriages on the grounds that bachelors without families made better soldiers.
Valentine was imprisoned by order of Claudius II and the person in charge of this task, the officer Asterius, wanted to test Valentine and asked him to restore his daughter's sight.
Valentine restored her sight and Asterius adopted Christianity as their religion. However, Claudius II ordered the martyrdom and execution of Valentine on February 14th 270 AD.
For restoring her sight, Asterius' daughter planted an almond tree with pink flowers next to Valentine's grave and for this reason the tree is now considered a symbol of love.
